Molecular Gas Distribution in Double-Nucleus Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies

چکیده

Millimeter (CO) observations of 5 double-nucleus ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIG) mergers are presented. With nuclear separations of 3 − 5 kpc, these galaxies are in the “intermediate” stages of the merger process. A preliminary comparison of the distribution of molecular gas (the likely fuel source for both starbursts and active galactic nuclei: AGN) shows a tendency for molecular gas to be associated with the AGN nucleus of ULIGs with “warm”, Seyfert-like infrared colors (f25μm/f60μm ≥ 0.20) and associated with both stellar nuclei of ULIGs with “cool” infrared colors (f25μm/f60μm < 0.2). Studies of ULIGs with a wide range of nuclear separations using the high resolution and increased sensitivity of ALMA will provide a larger statistical sample with which the gas distribution, molecular gas masses, and densities can be determined as a function of the evolutionary stage, starburst and AGN activity, and lookback time.

Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies

The IRAS survey of the local universe (z_0.1) has revealed the existence of a class of ultraluminous infrared galaxies with L(8-1000#m) > 1012L® that are slightly more numerous, and as luminous as optically selected quasars at similar redshift. Optical CCD images of these infrared galaxies show that nearly all are advanced mergers. Millimeter-wave CO (1 _ 0) observations indicate that these int...

VISUAL AND NEAR - INFRARED IMAGING OF ULTRALUMINOUS INFRARED GALAXIES : THE IRAS 2 Jy SAMPLE

New near-infrared and visual images at 2.2 /¿m and 6550 Â are presented for 46 galaxies having infrared luminosities of LIR>8.5X10 U L0, 60 fim flux densities greater than 1.94 Jy, and declinations greater than -35°. These galaxies make up a significant fraction of a complete, northern hemisphere sample of ultraluminous infrared galaxies. Visual and/or near-infrared imaging data now exist for 5...

Comparison of dust-to-gas ratios in luminous, ultraluminous, and hyperluminous infrared galaxies

The dust-to-gas ratios in three different samples of luminous, ultraluminous, and hyperluminous infrared galaxies are calculated by modelling their radio to soft X-ray spectral energy distributions (SED) using composite models which account for the photoionizing radiation from HII regions, starbursts, or AGNs, and for shocks. The models are limited to a set which broadly reproduces the mid-IR f...

Sub - arcsecond CO ( 1 – 0 ) and CO ( 2 – 1 ) observations of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy IRAS 10190 + 1322 ⋆

We present the results of high resolution mapping of the CO(1–0) and CO(2–1) emission of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy (ULIRG) IRAS 10190+1322, with the IRAM interferometer, down to an angular resolution of ∼0.3 ′′. This object is composed of two interacting galaxies with a projected nuclear separation of 6 kpc, and was selected to analyze the physical and dynamical properties of the molecu...

Statistical properties of ultraluminous IRAS galaxies from an HST imaging survey

We perform photometric measurements on a large HST snapshot imaging survey sample of 97 ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). We select putative nuclei from bright clumps in all the sample targets, mainly based on a quantitative criterion of I-band luminosity as well as the global and local morphological information. All the sources are then classified into three categories with multiple, d...
